Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky

United States

Cincinnati sits on the Ohio River across from Covington and Newport in Kentucky. German immigrants arrived from the 1830s, many from the farm country of northwest Germany, and the meatpacking trade earned the city the nickname Porkopolis. Their grain sausage became goetta, which both banks of the river now claim, with a summer Goettafest in Newport and Covington.
